The Non-Profit Sector in South Africa
Charities Aid Foundation, 1997.
One of the main challenges facing South Africa today is to tackle the social and economic legacy of apartheid and to strengthen democracy and civil society. The non-profit sector, the government and the private sector all have a key role to play in this process of development. South Africa has a vibrant and innovative non-profit sector, but it is experiencing severe problems. Many non-profit organizations actively opposed the apartheid government and, particularly in the final years of apartheid, funding from outside the country poured into the sector. Since the transition to democracy, this source of funds has greatly diminished. In addition, the non-profit sector has lost many skilled leaders to the government and business sectors.
