Category Winners

ASB Award for Excellence in an Annual Campaign - New Zealand Red Cross

If fundraising, at its essence, is about acquiring potential donors and then convincing them to financially support the cause, then this year’s winner has achieved these objectives most convincingly. The year’s acquisition and income have vastly exceeded what has been achieved in previous years because of adherence to the basics of fundraising and being prepared to learn and adapt from previous years’ experiences. Such constant striving to do better each year is admirable; and to substantially exceed all targets in this year makes them a deserving winner.

The winner of the ASB Award for Excellence in an Annual Campaign is New Zealand Red Cross for their Project Partners Campaign

Blackbaud Award for Excellence in a Donor Development Campaign - New Zealand Red Cross

The devastating Nepal earthquake last year was widely supported by New Zealanders through their gifts to various aid organisations. The winner of this category used this opportunity not only to raise a considerable amount of money for Nepal, but also very deliberately and strategically bring new donors onto the organisation’s database. A comparatively large numbers of new donors - well into the thousands - were brought on to the database and more than 90 percent of these donors were retained after a second appeal. In taking the opportunity of a major international disaster to introduce new donors to its cause, this organisation achieved the fine-line of balance between the commercial imperative and the ethics of charitable fundraising. Overall the planning, target-setting and execution was of the highest calibre.

The winner of the Blackbaud Award for Excellence in a Donor Development Campaign is New Zealand Red Cross, for their Nepal Earthquake Emergency Appeal.

New Zealand Post Award for Excellence in Direct Marketing - St John

The winning Direct Marketing campaign underlined yet again the truth of the fundraising maxim that ‘people give to people’. It was an excellent campaign, well thought-out and covered all pertinent bases in its execution. Targets were well-exceeded, communication channels were astutely and successfully used, and innovations introduced which, when all combined together, brought a synergy that made this a first-rate, winning campaign.

The winner of the New Zealand Post Award for Excellence in Direct Marketing is St John for their 2015 Christmas Appeal entitled ‘Mark’.

everydayhero Award for Excellence in Fundraising Events - Hospice New Zealand

This category exercised the judging panel more than other categories. It attracted the most entries and all were of a high calibre. So congratulations to all who entered the Events category! The winning entry’s event involved both the organisation’s nationwide affiliates and a nationwide retail chain – so it actively involved hundreds, if not more people in the campaign which was held in the lead-up to Christmas. It was an impressively detailed and precisely-planned campaign which rightly brought a superb result financially, as well as in acquisitions and the enthusiastic involvement of the staff of the retail chain. Its success is testimony to a very well-managed and executed campaign.

The winner of the everydayhero Award for Excellence in Fundraising Event is Hospice New Zealand for their Caring Connections Christmas Campaign.

Strategic Grants Award for Excellence in Grants - Living Springs

The winner displayed both a professionalism in approach and empathy for the cause that set them apart from the outset. Unusually if not uniquely the winner was able to put together, always within the confines of the grantors’ requirements, four successful grant applications, all for the same project. The case was carefully crafted to meet all grantors’ written requirements. Personal contact was then made with key personnel from the grantors and they were given further background to the project and an offer was made to take them of a tour of proposed project site, which some accepted. Overall, an ambitious ‘ask’ of grantors that fully deserved the very successful result it achieved.

The winner of the Strategic Grants Award for Excellence in Grants is Living Springs for the project, ‘Founders Field: a platform for greatness’

Thanks to Barrer & Co for their work in generating this income for Living Springs.

Xponential Philanthropy Award for Excellence in Sponsorship - New Zealand Red Cross

The winning entry had a very detailed plan that enabled them to build on a good-fit relationship with the sponsor and the time and effort invested paid off well above expectations. The sponsorship also involved the staff of the sponsoring corporate in a way which minimised some residual reluctance or cynicism and eventually fostered their support and enthusiasm. The success they achieved was not without some downsides and it is encouraging to note that the winner was fully prepared to acknowledge these and learn from unexpected challenges. Well done, indeed!

The winner of the Xponential Philanthropy Award for Excellence in Sponsorship is New Zealand Red Cross for their sponsorship programme with New Zealand Post.

Special award sponsored by Flightdec - Friends of Cancer Society Wellington

The winners of this Special Award entered the everydayhero Award for Excellence in Fundraising Events, but without detracting in any way from the already-announced winner of this category, the judging panel unanimously suggested making an exception by recommending this additional award. Volunteering is essential to the success of most if not all charitable organisations and volunteers contribute with their time, expertise and in fundraising itself. The group winning this Special Award were volunteers involved in all three of these components. In fact they were involved in the total organisation of the event and were fully responsible for it. This meant of course, that almost every dollar raised went directly to the cause.

This Special Award honours and recognises all our volunteers but in particular a team of volunteers who have done something extraordinary …

The winner of the Flightdec Special Award, is the Friends of Cancer Society, Wellington, for the successful Diplomatic Ball, held in Wellington.

The Soar Print FINZ Fundraising Excellence Award is awarded to a winner of one of these categories.

New Zealand Red Cross team - winners in the Soar Print FINZ Fundraising Excellence Awards 2016

Some aspects of the task of fundraising are more difficult than others. Consistently, one of the more difficult tasks is the acquisition of new donors. It is often an expensive project for low returns and the retention of new donors is always a challenge.

As is the custom, this Premier Award goes to an organisation which has already won a category award so their citation is known.

They have been chosen as winner of this Premier Award not only for the reasons already given but also in comparison with the fine achievements in the many disciplines of fundraising that have been recognised tonight, this entry stands out for its excellence in both implementation and outcomes achieved in what is perhaps the toughest task in fundraising.

The winner of the 2016 Soar Print FINZ Fundraising Excellence Award for Excellence in Fundraising is New Zealand Red Cross, for their Nepal Earthquake Emergency Appeal and especially the associated donor acquisition and subsequent donor retention strategy.
