Better Governance, Better Charities, Better Outcomes

The community sector, and especially trustees, must ensure they have proper governance procedures in place. It is the trustee, who is ultimately responsible for driving their community group or charity forward.

It is trustee boards that set the charity’s mission, appoint its top team, and oversee its actions. Trustees are fundamental to charities’ ability to survive and thrive. In the community sector, the onus for sound oversight and good practice lies entirely within the board itself.

Fundraising Institute of New Zealand, acting CEO, Sheridan Bruce says “Boards must be more engaged in creating impact and sustaining improvement within their organisations, as well as fulfilling the basic official functions. Boards need to focus on what makes them effective, and whether they have the will, ability and capacity to drive impact. The reward for better governance is a better charity—and ultimately a stronger, more sustainable organisation for the people and causes it serves, which is what it’s all about, after all”.

The Fundraising Institute of New Zealand and Tauranga City Council recognise better governance will result in better charities and better outcomes. But governance skills and understandings are learnt, not innate. They are working together to bring affordable governance training workshops to the community led by local fundraising and charity expert, Jim Datson, FFINZ.

Workshops will be conducting on Monday 28 and Wednesday 30 August at The School House, Historic Village, 17th Avenue, Tauranga. Bookings are essential but at the low subsidised price of $40, what charity wouldn’t invest in understanding how to run a successful charity?

Two four hour workshops are being offered to Tauranga community and charity groups and are designed for trustees and managers of small to medium sized charities, clubs or branches.

Being a successful charity

Jim will take participants through a journey of building for the future for success. Starting with your organisation’s vision, you will learn what’s required to deliver against this vision and how to plan, manage and balance your programme delivery with the demands of your organisation, all within your limited resources.

Specifically the ‘Being a successful charity’ four hour workshop will cover:

  • Delivering against your vision
  • Balancing programme and organisation demands
  • Acquiring and protecting all your resources
  • Gaining traction in your market
  • Attracting funding
  • Developing sensible and achievable plans
  • Finding assistance in a changing world

Trustee Excellence

Focusing on the attributes of being an excellent committee, board or trustee member of any small to medium-sized charity, club or branch, Jim will take you through:

  • Knowing your legal, moral and ethical responsibilities and obligations
  • Defining your role in governance, trusteeship and management
  • Fulfilling the expectations of your role
  • Understanding information
  • Practicing good decision-making
  • Supporting the leader and working with others
  • Playing the representation game

Both workshops will be supported with New Zealand charity statistics and case studies.
