Local Hawke's Bay community groups and charities welcome fundraising opportunity

A specially designed Fundraising Institute of New Zealand training programme will be coming to the Hawke's Bay in August.

This one-day event, to be held on 19 August at the Havelock North Function Centre, is designed for local fundraisers and volunteers wishing to learn fundraising strategies and to keep up to date with the latest happenings in New Zealand's fundraising landscape.

Sheridan Bruce, FINZ Marketing & Education Manager, says the Hawke's Bay councils and community groups have been very welcoming.

"They have welcomed us with open arms and we thank them for their support," she says.

The programme comprises a host of workshops including:

  • Understanding the grants process and how to write a grant application
  • How to write a fundraising plan and focus on promoting core messages
  • Using websites and online channels to secure donations
  • Securing major gifts and sponsorship for raising capital for a big project
  • Special events - Planning and acquiring new donors

Shirley Collins, Communications and Marketing Manager for Presbyterian Support East Coast, will present on two topics during the day: How your charity can become bequest ready and Creative event planning.

"The Fundraising Institute's training will be good for those who couldn't attend their annual conference held in Wellington earlier in the year - it brings some of that conference to the Hawke's Bay," she says.

Ms Collins' event-planning workshop will be based on Redefine - love your op-shop, an event run by Presbyterian Support East Coast where entrants repurpose op-shop items to create something fresh. She will explain the concept behind Redefine - love your op-shop, and why events can be profitable for charities and not-for-profits.

"Though often seen as risky, Charities can get great results from events. They mustn't rest on their laurels, though; they need to keep their events fresh. Redefine - love your op-shop has several income streams and is kept fresh by new entries each year."

Ms Bruce says, "We've had lots of interest from local community groups and iwi - and we're delighted to be able to introduce them to out fundraising programme and have the opportunity to work with them to help them achieve their fundraising goals."
