The Non-Profit Sector in Russia
Charities Aid Foundation, 1997.
The non-profit sector in Russia has been developing rapidly since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. There are now over 50,000 officially registered non-profit organizations. At a time when the role of government in social welfare provision is lessening, the emerging non-profit sector has been very successful in filling some of the gaps. It has played a key role in safeguarding the interests of children and of disabled, retired, homeless and other needy people, and in defending human rights and protecting the environment. In recent years support for the sector has come both from foreign foundations and foreign governments and from within Russia itself. However, there is still a huge need for additional support, both financial and technical.
